Daily Bible Reading Reflections

There’s No Such Thing as a Self-Existent, Self-Sufficient Sheep

Today’s Bible reading is Psalm 95.

For the LORD is a great God,
and a great King above all gods. (Psa 95:3)

Just how great?

In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.

The earth? It’s his. The sea? His. He made it.

But let’s talk about us–human beings–for a moment.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts… (Psa 95:6-8)

He is our Maker, just as surely as he formed the dry land and established the boundaries of the sea. We are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

There’s no such thing as a self-existent, self-sufficient sheep. I have a Creator. I need my Creator. To ignore his voice and harden my heart against him is foolishness.

Let us worship, therefore, today. Let us bow down. Let us kneel before our LORD–the great God and King above all gods. He will lead us in paths of righteousness, restoring our souls, if we will take our rightful place as the people of his pasture.
