What the Birds & Bushes Know

Our daily Bible reading schedule took us to Job 12 a couple of days ago. Take a moment to reflect on Job’s statement in 12:7-10:

“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;
or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you;
and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
Who among all these does not know
that the hand of the LORD has done this?
In his hand is the life of every living thing
and the breath of all mankind.”

As Spring makes its presence known a little more each day, open your eyes and see what the beasts, birds, and bushes are declaring: in God’s hand is the life of every living thing. “Look at the birds of the air,” Jesus encouraged in Matthew 6. “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.” What do you see? What you ought to see is “the hand of the LORD has done this.” Paul wanted his audience in Acts 17 to realize, “the God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth…is not far from each one of us, for ‘In him we live and move and have our being.’”

Even more profound is the fact that our Creator has spoken, revealing his will for his Creation. “With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13). Are we listening? “Who among all the beasts, birds, and bushes does not recognize God?” Job asked. Today, we have the opportunity to recognize what the birds and bushes already know: our God reigns. Let’s join Creation’s chorus in magnifying the Lord of heaven and earth today.
