Daily Bible Reading Reflections

Making the Most of Today’s 23,000

Today’s Bible reading is Psalm 150.

Breaths.

Breathing is one of those things we don’t think about until we slow down and intentionally reflect on what our amazing bodies are actually doing.

If you got 8 hours of sleep last night, you took somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 breaths. Your lungs were on God-designed autopilot. Stay awake for the next 16 hours and you’ll inhale more than 15,000 times.

God gave you your first breath and he’ll be present at your final breath. You’re living on God’s planet, breathing God’s air, with a body given to you … by God.

So what will you do with today’s 23,000?

Maybe that leads us to ask, “What’s the best possible use of God’s air?” Consider the last lines of Israel’s songbook, the Psalms of the Old Testament.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD! (Psa 150:6)

Millions of creatures great and small will fulfill that calling in their own God-appointed way today. You and I have been blessed with that same amazing opportunity…

To sing a song of praise. To whisper a prayer that will be heard in heaven. To share a word of encouragement. To express concern. To comfort as you have been comforted. To teach. To convey forgiveness. To nurture. To give thanks. To speak up in defense. To communicate love. To live in harmony with the Composer of all good things, to the praise of his glory.

Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! If he wills, you’ll borrow 23,000 of them today. Will you make the most of them?
