Bringing Children to Jesus is Never a Wasted Effort
Today’s Bible reading is 2 Chronicles 24 and Mark 10.
SLOW DOWN and take the time to really read this scene from Jesus’ life:
They were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. (Mark 10:13-16)
Think about that scene, young mom or dad. You got home last night after Bible class and you were exhausted. You barely had time to feed the family before class, getting to the church building was hectic, and getting everyone home and in bed was the icing on the cake of a chaotic day. Was it worth it? Hear Jesus say, “Let the children come to me.”
Think about that scene, Bible class teacher. You worked all day and while other adults were vegetating in front of the TV, you were singing “Jesus Loves Me” to a bunch of toddlers for the thousandth time. Was it worth it? Envision Jesus taking children in his arms and blessing them.
Think about that scene, shepherds and deacons and preachers who are in the thick of planning for 2020. It’s a busy time of year and it would be easy to push children’s Bible classes to the back burner. Aren’t there more important things? More pressing matters? Does excellence really matter when it comes to 7- and 8-year-olds? Hear Jesus say, “Don’t hinder the children, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”
Bringing children face-to-face with Jesus is never a wasted effort.
Take heart, young parent. Be encouraged, dedicated Bible class teacher. Press on, servant who is leading God’s people into 2020. Shaping hearts for God is the most important work in the world.
