“I Lift Up My Eyes”

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents (Psa 120-134), believed to be used as God’s people in ages past made their way “up” to Jerusalem (122:3-4). Take a moment to reflect on its beginning…

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

“I lift up my eyes.” Many of us have spent many hours this past week with eyes “down” on screens. The Lord’s day—the best day of the week—is a much needed opportunity and reminder to lift our eyes up from distractions, trivialities, and even our own selves to the Source of our help, the Fount of our blessings, the very Reason for our being. In fact, that might be a good reminder for the best way to start every morning this week. How much better off might my mindset and perspective be from the beginning of the day if I took some time to look at the sky before a screen? If I spent a few moments in prayer before I allowed myself to become preoccupied with the noise of the world? “I lift up my eyes.”

“From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121 may be 3,000 years old, but it endures as a powerful proclamation. God is our Creator and Sustainer. He is a stabilizer who never sleeps. A faithful keeper who never fails. He is our shade, our Savior, and he is worthy of our worship, “from this time forth and forevermore.”

Let’s bring him our best today, fix our eyes upon him, and give him everything we have to give this week.
