Just Fix the Boat
The old T.V. show, Gilligan’s Island, is alive and well on reruns. I used to watch the show a lot when I was growing up. There is an interesting paradox from the show that is so true to life. The Professor was a genius at making things. He could make coconut bombs, fancy huts, homemade microscopes, and generators. In nearly every episode he was busy making some complex gadget. Because of the Professor, life was made safe and comfortable for the passengers of the S. S. Minnow. But for some reason, he never fixed the boat. You would think, that if he could make all those other things, then he ought to be able to fix the boat. Instead of trying all those other elaborate schemes to get off the island, the most obvious one, fixing the boat, was ignored.
Sometimes all we need to do is to “Just fix the boat!”
We need to Fix The Boat Damaged By Worry. We can study the causes of worry. We can discuss the consequences of worry. We can even define and distinguish the differences between discouragement and depression. But until we fix the boat, we still worry. Worry chokes the life out of a Christian (Lk 8:14). God wants us to cast all our cares upon Him (1 Pet 5:4). Prayer and trust will fix the boat that worry has damaged! Just fix the boat!
We need to Fix The Boat Damaged By Temptation. A lot of time is spent talking about the role of the devil in our temptations. But until we actually get the tools out and fix the boat, the holes placed in our souls by temptation will keep us from journeying with the Lord. The Bible is very specific about temptation. Flee fornication (1 Cor 6:18). Flee youthful lusts (2 Tim. 2:22). Whatever is pure, honorable, and right, let your mind dwell on these things (Phil. 4:8). Just fix the boat!
We need to Fix the Boat Damaged By Church Problems. Few things hurt as much as the fussing and fighting that takes place in many congregations. Blame is sought. Threats are made. Feelings are hurt. The Lord is overlooked. Souls are lost. What should happen is: Fixing the boat!
Are you content to just stay on the island or are you one to fix the boat so we can get back home?
JUST FIX THE BOAT!
