The LORD is Righteous
“The LORD is righteous.” That’s the bedrock truth we run across in the middle of Psalm 129. “The LORD is righteous.” Maybe it feels as if the ground is sliding beneath you, the path ahead is foggy at best, and you could use a firm foothold for the day. Why not grab a hold of those four words, commit them to memory, and carry them with you wherever you go today? “The LORD is righteous.”
That anthem carries great weight in the context of Psalm 129. When others have “greatly afflicted” me, the LORD is righteous. When it feels as if “the plowers” have “plowed upon my back,” the LORD is righteous. When I bear the scars of “furrows made long,” the LORD is righteous. Though men and women choose wickedness, the LORD is righteous. Even as we entangle ourselves in the cords of rebellion, the LORD is righteous. When hatred is chosen and shame is deserved, the LORD is righteous. Though the consequences of our actions be bitter and costly, the LORD is righteous. When our own shortsightedness causes us to wither like the grass, the LORD is righteous. As we turn from our foolishness and return to the ancient paths, where the good way is, the LORD is righteous.
It’s a stable and steadfast truth, whatever may come today. However you may be treated. Whatever the choices, the trials, the opportunities, or temptations. Whether any human being on the planet chooses to acknowledge it or not. The LORD is righteous. He does not change. His way is the right way. His thoughts, the best thoughts. His input, higher and holier than any other.
The LORD is righteous. Anchor your heart to that reality. Set your mind by that marker. Walk in the light of that ancient truth, and you’ll find your way. The way. The truth. The life.
