A Goal for the Weekend: Not Sluggish, But Zealous Imitators

Today’s Bible reading is Genesis 20 and Hebrews 6.

In Hebrews 6:11-12, we run across a great mindset for the upcoming weekend:

And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Sluggish. To be sluggish is to be slow to act, slow to respond. Sluggish people have little motivation, little energy. Sometimes, sluggish people are just lazy.

Don’t be sluggish as a child of God! That’s the straight-talk from Hebrews 6. Rather, be an imitator of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises of God. Look to the examples of people who have come before you and are alongside of you who are making a real difference. Be inspired by their excitement for Jesus. Be stirred by their willingness to serve. These are men and women who are on the path to the inheritance of God’s precious and very great promises.

“We desire each one of you to show the same earnestness…” Each one of us. That includes me. That includes you. So here’s the challenge for your Friday: demonstrate earnestness. Show yourself to be focused, acting with purpose, dedicated to zealous effort because you want to have the same “full assurance of hope in God until the end.”

That’s a goal worth having as we head into the weekend.
