Daily Bible Reading Reflections

A Holy Destroyer

Today’s Bible reading is 1 Samuel 21 and 1 John 3.

The reason Jesus came is…

You can use the Bible to fill in that blank with a variety of answers. The reason provided in 1 John 3:8 is worth thinking about today.

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

Our Savior and King is a holy Destroyer. Consider just 1 John 3 as Exhibit-A.

Jesus destroys ALIENATION from God. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (3:1)

Jesus destroys DESPAIR over the future. “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” (3:2)

Jesus destroys IMPURITY. “Everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.” (3:3)

Jesus destroys SIN. “You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.” (3:5)

Jesus destroys SLAVERY. “No one who abides in him keeps on sinning.” (3:6)

Jesus destroys SELFISHNESS. “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (3:16)

Jesus destroys HYPOCRISY. “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (3:18)

Jesus destroys GUILT. “By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” (3:19-20)

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

Don’t allow the devil to reconstruct in your life what Jesus came to destroy.
