John 10: The Sheep and the Shepherd

Today’s Bible reading is John 10 and in it, Jesus uses a simple figure to describe himself and his disciples.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” (John 10:1-4)

In John 10:14, Jesus straightforwardly reveals, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.”

What a profound thought to meditate on throughout the day! Jesus knows me. Jesus knows you. He knows your name. He is able to call you by name.

Do you know his voice? Why should disciples of Jesus regularly and consistently read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? To know the voice of the good shepherd. And when we know his voice…

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

Make sure to take the time to open your Bible and hear the voice of the good shepherd who knows you by name today.
