Daily Bible Reading Reflections

John 8: Let Jesus Teach You This Week

Today’s Bible reading is John 8, and while there are a variety of powerful lessons throughout the chapter, I’d encourage you to reflect on what we’re told in the first two verses.

They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.

Can you imagine what that was like? To watch as Jesus of Nazareth sat down in front of you, took time out of his busy schedule, and showed interest in you? What was it like to personally hear the teaching of Jesus?

Here’s the remarkable thing: because of the work of men like John, you can experience the same thing this week. Early in the morning, on your lunch break, or late at night, you can come to Jesus, just as those people in John 8 did. You can sit down with the Son of God himself. You can open your Bible and allow him to teach you.

In today’s reading, he teaches us–through the example of the woman caught in adultery, in his testimony of being “the light of the world,” in his challenge to abide in his word that the truth might set us free, and in his incredible claim that “before Abraham was, I am.” In tomorrow’s reading, he’ll teach us through the healing of a man born blind. Throughout the week, we can sit at his feet and learn from “the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.” Our faith can grow in the One who so powerfully revealed himself as “the resurrection and the life.”

All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.

What an incredible blessing to be able to learn from Jesus this week!
