Daily Bible Reading Reflections

On a Day Like Today, What Can the Righteous Do?

Today’s Bible reading is Genesis 27 and Hebrews 13.

The morning after the sort of news that came out of Parkland, Florida yesterday, we might not even know what to think or how to feel. As the father of three school-aged children, the more details emerged last night, the more I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach. It took me a long time to fall asleep, but the feeling in the pit of my stomach is nothing compared to what so many are experiencing in Florida’s Broward County and beyond. On days like this, we ask with David in Psalm 11, “What can the righteous do?”

If that question is on your mind today, maybe Hebrews 13 can offer some insight. What can the righteous do?

  • We can let brotherly love continue
  • We can show hospitality
  • We can stand up for those who are being mistreated
  • We can hold marriage in honor
  • We can be gratefully content with what we have
  • We can cling to the promise of a Father who has sworn, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”
  • We can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
  • We can remember and encourage our leaders
  • We can imitate the faith of those who are a little further down the pathway of life
  • We can do good
  • We can share what we have
  • We can pray

What can the righteous do on a day like today? There’s so much we can’t do. But we can be salt in our communities. We can be light in our schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. We can refuse to be overcome by evil, confidently determined to overcome evil with good.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Heb 13:8)

May we be humble sharers of that good news in these tough times.
