Psalm 31: “Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit”

Today’s Bible reading is Psalm 31. Throughout this prayer of David, you can feel the fervency of his desperation and dependency on God. But be sure to meditate on the powerful resolution in Psalm 31:5: “Into your hand I commit my spirit.”

We entrust all sorts of things “into the hands” of others:

  • We “commit” our cars to a valet parking attendant when we hand over the keys
  • We “commit” our finances into the hands of advisors and investors
  • We “commit” our overnight welfare to hotel managers and employees when we check in
  • We “commit” our physical health to doctors and nurses in the Emergency Room

We know what it is to trust and depend on others. But to whom have you entrusted your one-and-only spirit? Who is capable and worthy of being trusted with your soul, the soul that will live on after your time on earth is spent? No human being is up to the task, including ourselves! But the LORD is a faithful God (Psa 31:5). “In you, O LORD, do I take refuge” (Psa 31:1).

What a blessing to be able to pray with David today, “Into your hand I commit my spirit,” and to know that my inner man is in eternally-good hands. What a comfort to know that the Sovereign Lord of the universe is willing to “incline” his ear to me (Psa 31:2). What an encouragement to be able to build my day and my life on him as “my rock and my fortress” (Psa 31:3).

Love the LORD, all you his saints!
The LORD preserves the faithful
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the LORD! (Psa 31:23-24)
