Daily Bible Reading Reflections

There’s More to Life Than “This Life”

Today’s Bible reading is 1 Chronicles 29 and 1 Corinthians 15.

Resurrection. It’s the theme of 1 Corinthians 15.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures… (1 Cor 15:3-4)

Resurrection. Do we realize it wasn’t an isolated, one-time event?

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? (1 Cor 15:12)

Resurrection. Do we recognize Jesus was the first, but far from the last?

Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Cor 15:20-22)

Resurrection. Do we understand the implications?

If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead… (1 Cor 15:19-20)

Resurrection changes everything. Think about what we’ve just been told. “This life” isn’t the “only” life. However enjoyable or difficult our few decades in “this life” are, if we ignore what is “of first importance” and live for “this life only,” we will eventually have missed it all.

Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. His resurrection wasn’t an isolated, one-time event. He was the first, but far from the last. There is more to my life than “this life,” and how I live now shapes the trajectory of life eternal.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Cor 15:58)

Enjoy today. Just realize, today isn’t all there is.
