What Are You Preaching to Your Own Soul?

Today’s Bible reading is Psalm 43. It’s just five verses, but you can use it as a prompt for an important question: “What do I preach to my own soul?”

Have you ever thought about that? You probably “talk” to your own soul more than you talk to anyone else. But as you do, day after day after day, what do you say? Do you “preach” things like:

  • “You’re not enough; you’ll never be enough”?
  • “You’re awesome; no one is as great as you are”?
  • “You need to be worried because everything depends on you”?
  • “No one loves you; no one has time for you”?
  • “You can get away with it; no one will ever know”?
  • “You’re the only one who cares”?

Day after day after day, what do you “preach” to your own soul? Notice what the psalmist “preached” in Psalm 43:5:

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

Hope in God. That’s a message we all need to hear today. That’s a message I need to preach to my own soul today. What about you?
