Daily Bible Reading Reflections

When You Love Jesus, Expect Company

Today’s Bible reading is 1 Samuel 11 and John 14.

One of my goals for today is to meditate on one verse from the Bible–to turn it over in my head throughout the day and allow each phrase to sink into the recesses of my heart. I invite you to do the same. Remember and reflect on this one verse. I’ve written it down on a little piece of paper and stuck it in my pocket. I plan on coming back to it again and again as the day unfolds. It’s God-breathed fuel for my journey home. Ready? Here it is:

“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23)

To love Jesus is to open the gate of my heart, recognizing the sovereignty of my true and rightful King. His word is to be treasured. If I truly love him, his word will take root in my heart and bear the fruit of obedience.

To love Jesus is to be loved by the Father. God is love. By this we know love, that his Son laid down his life for us. When I humble myself under the mighty hand of the Son, I am the heir of a divine promise: the Father not only loves the Son; he loves me.

To love Jesus is to have company. Listen to the Lord on the night of his betrayal: “We will come to him and make our home with him.” As John would remind in his first letter, “God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:16).

Do you love Jesus? You will keep his word. You will be loved. You should expect company. And you can rest assured, “I am heaven-bound.”

Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. (1 John 2:24-25)
