“If the LORD Had Not Been My Help…”

Psalm 94 tells us a lot about the LORD. He is the shaper of the human ear and the designer of human eyes (94:9). It is he who teaches man knowledge and disciplines the nations (94:10). He is judge of the earth (94:2), and this ancient Hebrew poem calls on all of us to understand. Does not the shaper of the ear hear? Will not the designer of the eye see? The LORD of heaven and earth knows the very thoughts of each one of us (94:9-11).
Not everyone created in his image is willing to listen or submit themselves to their Creator. Psalm 94:1-7 describes the proud, wicked, arrogant and boastful evildoers who crush, afflict, and kill, all while saying, “The LORD does not see.” To such rebellious fools the LORD will reveal himself as a God of vengeance (94:1), repaying to the proud what they deserve. But that doesn’t have to be my experience, or yours.
Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD,
and whom you teach out of your law. (94:12)
For those willing to honor him as God, the LORD is a stronghold, a rock of refuge (94:22). He is a help, “my help” (94:17). He is a God of steadfast love who will not forsake his people (94:14, 18).
When the cares of my heart are many,
your consolations cheer my soul. (94:19)
Psalm 94 tells us a lot about the LORD. Vengeance is his. He will not be mocked. He treats iniquity as eternally serious and will deal with wickedness in his own perfectly righteous way. But his heart’s desire? He yearns to guide us, bless us, cheer our souls, and give us rest from the messes of our own making. “If the LORD had not been my help…” How thankful we ought to be that he has been, is, and will be our help. My help.
Let’s honor him today.
