The Manifold Works of Our Maker

Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, you are very great! (104:1)
Psalm 104 takes us on an amazing tour of God’s creation.
- He has stretched out the heavens like a tent (104:2-4)
- He has set the earth on its foundations, causing the mountains to rise, the valleys to sink, and the waters to fill the deep (104:5-9)
- He waters the mountains, making springs gush forth in the valleys, giving drink to every beast of the field (104:10-13)
- He causes the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate (104:14-15)
- He abundantly waters the trees, giving the birds a home among the branches (104:16-18)
- He made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun to rise and set, providing night for the beasts to creep about and day for man to labor in the light (104:19-23)
- The sea, great and wide, teems with innumerable creatures (104:25-26)
- All living things, both great and small, were created to look to their Creator (104:27-30)
O LORD, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures. (104:24)
Psalm 104 takes us on an amazing tour of God’s creation, but it also stands as a timeless call to do more than marvel at the majesty of the world around us. Psalm 104 is ultimately a call to worship…
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being. (104:33)
…and a reminder to live for the One who has wisely created, patiently nurtured, and lovingly sustained it all.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the LORD.
Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more!
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
Praise the LORD! (104:34-35)
This is our Father’s world. With the rising of this morning’s sun, he continues to graciously provide life and breath and everything. The earth, full of his creatures, is looking to him to give them what they need, in his time. Today is a fresh opportunity for us to do the same, eagerly and wholeheartedly answering the call to worship.
“O LORD my God, you are very great! I will sing your praises. May my meditation be pleasing to you. My joy is rooted in you.”
All things praise him. Lord, may we.
