The One Who Sits While Angels Stand

Today’s Bible reading is Genesis 15 and Hebrews 1.

In the introduction of The Letter to the Hebrews, the author is drawing our attention to the supremacy of God’s Son.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. (Heb 1:1-4)

The Son has sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

In Luke 1:19, an angel named Gabriel appeared to a man named Zechariah and said, “I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.” This is exactly what the writer of Hebrews is describing. “Are [angels] not ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (Heb 1:14)

Angels stand in the presence of God. The Son sits at the right of the Majesty on high. Angels are servants. The Son is the heir of all things, the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature, and the upholder of the universe by the word of his power (Heb 1:2-3).

I ought to be thankful for the service of angels, no doubt. But the one who sits while angels stand is worthy of my soul, my life, my all. May we live with that worshipful awareness today.
