“Time and Space Are Praising Thee”

The four-person crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission have transmitted some absolutely incredible images back to Earth this week. With their lunar flyby around the moon, they traveled farther than any human has ever traveled into space, more than 250,000 miles away from our beautiful planet. In doing so, they saw parts of the moon no human has ever seen before.

It’s a mind-blowing accomplishment. Have you thought about it from the standpoint of Scripture?

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens…
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him? (Psa 8:1, 3-4)

Like the moon…
a faithful witness in the skies. (Psa 89:37)

[The LORD] made the moon to mark the seasons… (Psa 104:19)

Give thanks to the LORD…
…to him who made the great lights…
the sun to rule over the day…
the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures forever. (Psa 136:1, 7-9)

Praise [the LORD], sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars…
Kings of the earth and all peoples,
princes and all rulers of the earth!
Young men and maidens together,
old men and children!
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
his majesty is above earth and heaven. (Psa 148:3, 11-13)

There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. So is it with the resurrection of the dead… (1 Cor 15:40-42)

Prior to this week, there were parts of the moon no human eye had ever beheld. And yet, ever since its creation, it has served as a faithful witness to the majesty of the Maker who set it in place.

Creation is singing above us, beneath us, and all around us. Angels. Stars. Planets. Moons. Mountains. Hills. Fruit trees and cedars. Great sea creatures, creeping things, beasts, and flying birds. Fire and hail. Snow, mist, and stormy winds. “He commanded and they were created.” Every time we get fresh glimpses of our Creator’s glorious handiwork, it ought to move us and motivate us to contribute to the chorus.

All things praise Thee–night to night
Sings in silent hymns of light;
All things praise Thee–day by day
Chants Thy pow’r in burning ray;
Time and space are praising Thee;
All things praise Thee–Lord, may we! (George W. Conder, 1853)
